I will not say “it’s important that everyone see it.” I hate the word “important” because it usually means “not fun,” like “it’s important to teach your kids about hygiene.”
This movie was not in the “not fun” category at all! It was the opposite. It was insanely brilliant, scary, funny, compelling, clever, thrilling. Interesting. Exciting. Everything fun.
It made me feel even more stupid for all the times I did or said something like “hey did you hear the DJ?” to a POC and then went into my head thinking…
Oh god the DJ was black. African-American. No, black. Because why do we assume someone who’s black is from Africa? That would be dumb. The DJ was black. And I just mentioned the DJ to one of the only three black people who were at the party. And now he’s thinking “she brought up the DJ because she assumes that’s what I’d be interested in, even though we were having a fine conversation about the mixed scotch drinks.”
I wonder if he thinks I think he’d be more into the DJ and hip-hop because he’s black. How can I take it back?
I can’t. It’s too late. Now I’m in the category of un-woke. Shit. I really thought I was mostly woke. I wouldn’t go as far as 100% woke. That’d be presumptuous. Besides, who is 100% woke? Even the most woke POCs (does that have an S at the end if it’s plural? Why would it? It’s people, not peoples) wouldn’t consider themselves 100% woke. So if they’d say 95% I’m gonna give myself like 85-90% woke.
But let’s face it. I’m probably more like 75%. I keep finding myself with more privilege to check. I hate that expression. “Check your privilege.” It sounds like I’m leaving my mink stole with the coat check. “Excuse me, white girl. You gotta check your privilege before you go in the club!”
Maybe your privilege is in indirect proportion to how woke you are?
DOES BROKE = WOKE?
Am I allowed to have a voice if I'm white, even though I'm a woman?
Is it offensive that I call a smurf a person of color?
Or is that just hack?
Are smurfs woke?
Any self-conscious awkward white liberals out there wanna comment? Or POC (or POCs) who wanna tell me to shut up about DJs?
