Samson was born on Friday, the 13th of November. He was already 10 days late by then. We were going to induce him that night, so he’d actually be born on Saturday the 14th, bypassing the anti-holiday. Then Samson took matters into his own hands and arrived on the 13th.
Rob and I figured we should embrace the fact that our son was born on this weirdly superstitious day. Who knows–maybe he’ll be cool and funky because of it. There’s a whole movie franchise based on the day, after all. I tell people, “well, you know, in the Jewish faith, 13 is actually a lucky number.” Not that Jews don’t have our share of superstitions (evil eye, poo poo poo). But we like to turn the shit around.
Fun fact: I grew up on the 13th floor. A lot of New York buildings didn’t even have a 13. They just skipped it all together. I remember being in elevators with friends who would hold their breath as we went from 12 to 14, the way you do when you drive past a graveyard. Then they’d come to my building and say, “woah, your building has a 13th floor and you live on it? Creepy.” I’d be like, “well, you know, in the Jewish faith, 13 is actually a lucky number.” Then they’d shut up — either because they were busy holding their breath or they felt bad for calling me a creepy Jew. (Bringing religion into it is usually a conversation stopper.)
So I’m being a good Jew and turning the shit around. Yay, 13!
What do spit-up and 13 have in common? Nothing, but this is a blog post not a term paper. Besides, it’s Friday. Loosen up.
So how do you feel about the number 13? What’s your take on the Jews? Spit-up thoughts? Please do share…

Yay thirteen birthdays. Some of my good friends have bdays on the 13ths. In fact, one of my best friends just had a baby today!

HOw’d I miss this until today? Did you know that Dad’s parents also lived on the 13th floor, and so did Aunt Paul. Isn’t that weird?
Congrats to Samson. Obviously he’s a lucky 13.
